- Talai refers to a traditional mattress stuffed with cotton that is used for sleeping or lounging, especially in North India.
- These mattresses consist of a cotton fabric casing that is hand-stitched and then filled with layers of cotton stuffing.
- The fabric casing is usually made from sturdy unbleached cotton cloth like khaddar to withstand prolonged use. Fillings can range from cotton wool to finer kapok cotton.
- Talais come in thickness ranging from 2 inches to over 6 inches. Thinner ones work well in summers while thicker, luxurious ones are popular in winters.
- They are placed on the floor or bed frame and used often with a cotton dhurrie rug placed on top for warmth. Some also use reed mats below for ventilation.
